How to join the SANDF Careers & Traineeship Programs
You can join the South African Reserve Force in two ways, through the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) or through direct recruitment. MSDS is a Ministry of Defense program that provides an entry-level platform for young South Africans who wish to serve in the South African Defense Force.
If you are selected to join the South African Defense Force through MSDS, you will receive an initial 2-year volunteer service. After the initial 2 years of service, you will receive a 5-year contract to join the subscription, renewable until age 65. Direct recruitment is only available to people with special skills such as engineers, IT specialists, diesel mechanics, etc.
Requirements to participate of SANDF Careers
To be eligible for the MSDS program, you must:
- Be a South African citizen;
- Prove age between 18 and 22 years;
- Currently working on National Seniors Certificate (12th year) or completed;
- Have no criminal record;
- Preferably single;
- Meet medical health requirements for appointment in the South African Defense Force. Prepare for basic military training, functional training and uniformed service.
